What should I be aware of BEFORE surfing for or buying gay porn on the 'net?

So you are on the hunt for some gorgeous gay teen boys and twinks posing in photos and hardcore videos for your exclusive enjoyment... Well there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure a safe surfing experience (along with staying away from that six letter word called "regret"). We've compiled a list based on the most common concerns we get from our surfers and based on our years of reviewing experience.

  • Promises, Promises... Almost every gay porn site you land on promises you the "cutest" teen boys and "hottest" twinks that you've ever seen. We've heard that line so many times it makes us naucious! A great gay teenboy and twinks porn site will actually show you a decent amount of preview pictures and videos so you know what you are getting for your money. BoyStation , Boy Crush , Gay Teen Studio , Teens Boys World and Original Boys are sites that offer HEAPS of FREEBIES so you know they can deliver on their promises. Stay away from sites with flashy landing page graphics designed to seperate you from your money, and sites with little to no previews.

  • Exclusive?... How many times have we seen a site that advertises it's content as 100% "Exclusive"? It's a safe bet that most gay porn sites like to use this magic word. However reality is a bit different... The intended meaning of the word "exclusive" is that the models and or content found on the site in question can only be found there, and no where else. In reality this is a very hard goal to acheive seeing that models do work for a variety of studios who licence their work to a number of gay porn sites. We've personally come across sites who advertise "exclusive" models and content but to our dismay, some of the very same models and photosets can be found elsewhere. This could be because the same sets were licenced to another competing gay porn site or they were "ripped" (stolen) from the originating site without the owners consent. In our experience, only a handful of sites truely have exclusive models and content... some examples are: Boy Crush , Gay Teen Studio , Teens Boys World, PlanetLads and AlexBoys . Remember "exclusive" and "original" have slightly different meanings. Original content means that the photos and videos in question cannot be found anywhere else but the model in question most likely has done work for other sites. Some examples of great sites that contain lots of "original" content are BoyStation , Twink Academy , BoyCumParty , AdamsBoys and Cute Latin Boys .

  • Fly By Night Operations... The life cycle of most porn sites is actually very short. Most don't survive more than a few months due to lack of experience on part of the webmaster or intentionally (the latter being the worst case scenerio). Our surfers LOVE new porn sites because they offer the promise of never seen before models and content. However caution is advised before providing your personal and banking information to brand spanking new sites because there is the small chance that they will take your money and information, never to be seen again. There are lots of great sites today that were "new" just a year ago (Boy Crush is an example that comes to mind) that turned out to be truely unique and grew into a well repected gay teenboy and twinks porn site. But of course, for each success story, there is more than a fair share of bad apples. Best course of action is to research "new" sites on review sites like Teen Boy Review or one of our partner sites called The Best Porn for objective information. Also make sure this new site is using a reputable third party billing company such as CCBill, Verotel , SegPay , PayCom, GXBilling etc instead of taking your personal and banking information directly. A third party billing company will safe guard your information (and privicy) and will never share sensitive details with the porn site in question, and should there be a problem (like a site suddenly going offline for more than 24 hours), you can always contact them for resolution or a refund. There are some sites like BFCollection that have their own in house processing (EENT) which are perfectly safe since these sites have been in business for years and years and have a solid reputation. BFCollection has been around since 1998 to be exact. The best rule for new sites is to follow your gut, if you are not comfortable doing the transaction, then simply move onto another site that's been around a long time and has an excellent reputation such as BoyStation (launched in 1997) or Original Boys (launched in 1999).

  • Those Tempting Trial Offers... "access our gay porn site for ONLY $1.95..." is an example of a marketing phrase you are likely to run into in the course of your surfing. The ultimate question we need to answer is "Am I really getting a good deal and are there any strings attached?" - the answer to that question really depends on which site is making the offer. There are GOOD trial offers and there are BAD trial offers. Generally a GOOD trial offer allows you access to all areas of the site at a reasonable cost for a decent length of time (anywhere between 3 to 10 days) along with providing you a way to cancel should you decide the site is not to your liking. Sites like Extreme Gay Boys and BoyzParty have decent trial offers. The BAD trial offers are the ones designed to give you limited access to the content for very short periods of time (ie 24-48 hours) with no clear way of cancelling. This essentially sets you up for the "rebill" which can set you back an average of $30-$50 depending on the site and it's content. Also keep in mind some sites have rules meant to increase the chances of a rebill like stating you must cancel the trial membership 24 hours before it expires etc. So if you bought a 24 hour trial under those conditions, you're screwed (and not in the manner you'd prefer). Read the trial terms and conditions carefully and don't forget to cancel if you don't intend on continuing your membership.

  • Restrictions, Restrictions... Before your join what seems like a great site, make sure you fully read their terms and conditions (also affectionately known as "terms and restrictions") to avoid any unwanted surprises. While most gay porn sites these days allow you to download and keep as much content as you want, others have daily download limits or retrict the ability to download videos by forcing members to use the sites embedded video players etc. Some sites do this to ensure that you are "locked in" as long you want to keep viewing the content, while "protecting" it's content from those who join using a trial membership and then download every last photo and video, and then cancel, never to be seen again. Many sites also use what's known as "DRM" (Digital Rights Management") Technology which will allow you to download and play videos off your hard-drive as long as you remain a member of the site or have a valid licence. We personally dislike the use of DRM because it's a pain should your computer crash and you loose your licence etc. Thankfully though gay porn sites are starting to ditch this pointless technology in favour of allowing its members more freedom to download the videos of thier choice. Ultimately its your call whether you are OK with the sites terms and conditions, so make sure you are comfortable with them before you join. If Teen Boy Review is aware of any significant restrictions, we will usually mention them in that sites review, so they are a good starting place for detailed site background information.

  • Avoiding The Crap Sites... For every really good teen boy and twinks gay porn site there are at least 100 crap sites who offer recycled content at astronomical prices. So how does one avoid this potential avalanche of shit sites? In one word: RESEARCH! While some sites are obviously bad and others that look bad are actually quite decent, you won't know for sure unless you do some research. Best place to start is porn review sites like Teen Boy Review or some of our friends such as The Best Porn , Porn Inpector or Gay Demon . Keep in mind that most of our friends review both straight and gay sites of all niches so their reviews will have a slightly different tone than Teen Boy Review which is dedicated to reviewing gay porn sites whose main niche is teenage boys and twinks (aged 18-23). Another good place to look for information is member forums or simply doing an internet search on Google, MSN or Yahoo etc. You also need to know how much and what kind of content you getting for your hard earned money which leads us to our next point...

  • Is It a Good Value For Money... This is somewhat open to interpretation, however here are a few things you should be looking at in determining the answer. Volume Of Content: If a site is charging you $35 a month for access to a few hundered photos and a handfull of videos, it's likely most would see this as a waste of money (unless the boy was absolutely stunning.. then maybe he's worth it). On the other hand if you are paying less than $30 a month for access to over 400,000 digital photos and 3000 video clips plus FREE access to countless webcam and gay magazine sites (as is the case at BFCollection), you would be hard pressed to find someone who thought that was a rip off. Some surfers tend to simply look at whats being charged rather than also checking to see how much content they are actually getting. The next key area is Quality Of Content: So you are getting tens of thousands of photos and heaps of videos for $15 a month but when you fork over the money and login, you are shocked to see that the pics are from the early 90's with small resolutions and poor quality photography and the videos look like they were shot on someones old cellphone.. where did you go wrong? Chances are you joined a site being run by Joe Schmo from his parents basement who simply ripped the material off newsgroups or were downloaded from now derfunct porn sites. Generally you can spot these types of sites by how they are setup, the more thought that goes into designing the site and its graphics, the better chance of scoring quality content. The best defense is research and listening to your hunches - if it looks like crap on the outside, chances are it's crap on the inside as well. Another thing to look at is Frequency Of Updates: We all know that surfers love fresh content on a regular basis so when looking at the overall package, make sure you know how often the site updates. Generally most sites will post a new complete gallery (at least 60-120+ photos) or video once a week which is considered the norm. Many sites are now moving towards updating more frequently (such as Original Boys - daily!,  BFCollection - every 2 days or Boy Crush - every 3-4 days) with larger volumes of content being added each time (not just a handful of pics like some sites). Our reviews will tell you how often and how much content is added on any given site, so they are a great place to start. Finally when it comes to getting a good value for money, Membership Perks and Goodies can make or break the deal. Many gay porn sites now have members forums, bonus access to other porn sites, free DVD offers etc to help sweeten the pot. Before passing over a potential site, see what its offering for join up goodies or membership perks. You might find something enticing. Teen Boy Review makes it a point to outline any and all goodies and perks in our site listings.

  • Legal Landmines... The internet has been a boon to the porn industry that was once retricted to seedy stores and magazines and videos sent in those charming plain brown packages. How porn has evolved! But with evolution comes growing pains. While 99% of porn sites do everything in their power to ensure that they stay in the law's good graces, there are those who would take advantage of children for profit. How does one avoid such sites and that dreaded knock at the door? Well, there are a few things to look for when navigating gay porn minefield:
    • The Models - Everyone ages at different rates, so some models who are 18 or 19 years old can easily look anywhere between 3 years younger or older depending on genetics or diet. Typically models from Eastern Europe, Russia or Asia tend to look much younger due to both reasons with diet being the larger factor. However if a given site has models that simply look TOO young as in barely out of puberty, then you may want to avoid these types of sites even if they have compliance statements posted. The younger the models look, the harder it will be to justify to the authorities that you were not actively seeking  underage content. Ultimately, if you are not comfortable with models that tend to look much younger than their age, then avoid such sites. Teen Boy Review lists sites who models range in age from 18-20 years (and 21-23 years where such content is no more than 20% of the sites total offerings), with a wide variety of types from those who look like they just had their 18th birthday to more defined college age twinks.

    • Compliance Statements & Disclaimers... DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE AND CHECK THESE! We can't stress this point enough. Make sure the sites you are about to join have adequate 18 USC 2257 or equivilent compliance statements (for those porn sites based outside of the United States) along with clearly visible disclaimers stating that "...all models appearing or engaged in explicit sexual activities on this website were at least 18 years of age or older at the time such materials were produced." - this would be the MINIMUM acceptable disclaimer. Don't accept something that simply says "All models are 18 years of age or older" without something more specific like a 18 USC 2257 compliance statement, Custodian of Records information page or something outlined in the sites Terms & Conditions - If a site simply states that their models "are 18 years of age or older", it leaves doubt as to the models age at the time of production. At Teen Boy Review we check 18 USC 2257 compliance statements (or their international equivilents), custodial records and the sites terms of service before listing or reviewing a site to ensure that the models are of legal age.

    • ID & Proof of Age Documents... A site that specializes in younger looking models ("barely legal") will generally post samples of the models ID & proof of age documents as a matter of good business practice (and to satisfy the authorities). If the models are still lucky enough to have peach fuzz on their faces rather than a 5 O'Clock shadow, we suggest looking for samples of their photo ID just to be on the safe side. Some sites like Original Boys or Extreme Gay Boys will have direct links to a model's photo ID where there could be some doubt about the models age at the time of production. Sites that do this, are generally very safe since they've gone the extra mile to alliviate members fears of possesing potentilly illegal or questionable content. IF A SITE POSTS PHOTO ID - CHECK IT!

    • Billing Companies... In recent years, the credit card companies have been putting the squeeze on third party billers to ensure that any sites they process for are 100% compliant with 18 USC 2257 record keeping regulations. This is because Visa, MasterCard and Discover are based out of the US where non compliance will have severe financial and legal implications. Third party billing companies such as CCBill, Verotel , SegPay , EENT, Epoch (formally known as 'Paycom') and GXBilling have strict screening processes before they will even process one transction to ensure they don't loose their right to process credit/debit transactions along with avoiding criminal prosecution. We've heard of cases where a sites content was clearly legal (models appeared to be 20+) but were refused billing services due to potentially misleading domain names. Another case we are aware of involved a site that received too many refund/chargeback requests - this generally indicates that members were uncomfortable with the content to the point where they called the third party biller and demanded a refund along with reporting the site as potentially having underage content. Excessive chargebacks can also point to credit card fraud. The above examples should give you an idea of how strict things have become for porn sites, especially those in the teens and twinks niche. IF A SITE USES A REPUTABLE THIRD PARTY BILLING COMPANY, IT'S A VERY GOOD INDICATOR THAT THEIR CONTENT IS LEGAL - STAY AWAY FROM SITES WHO ONLY ACCEPT CASH, WIRES OR PAYMENT FROM AN UNKNOWN BILLING COMPANY.

    • Length of Time in Operation... This one is also a fairly reliable indicator. Sites who have a solid reputation for staying within the law will have been on the internet for at least a couple of years, some of which have been online for over ten years such as BFCollection (1997), BoyStation (1997) or Original Boys (1999). The longer a site has been around, the safer it is to join. Most sites who have questionable or clearly illegal content are generally discovered and shut down within months if not weeks, though there is no 100% in this area.

    • Know Your Local / Jurisdictional Laws BEFORE Joining... WE CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH! - THE ONUS IS ON YOU TO BE FULLY AWARE OF AND COMPLY WITH ALL APPLICABLE  JURISDICTIONAL AND FEDERAL LAWS REGARDING SEXUALLY EXPLICIT MATERIALS. Every country, state, province or local jurisdiction will have varying laws when it comes to pornography whether straight or gay. As a general rule, the "international" age of majority for pornographic content is 18 years of age or older, though in some countries like Japan it's 20 with NO frontal nudity allowed (exposed genitals). Other countries take a much harsher stand on pornography and have banned it outright and will impose severe sentences on both producers and those who download / view nude images of anyone at any age. Such countries include China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Thailand (yes! we are not kidding, porn is illegal in Thailand) along with a number of other Middle Eastern / Asian nations. Most Western nations such as US, UK, Canada and Australia are fairly uniform in their laws concerning porn, though there are some differences. The US has much stricter record keeping and child protection laws compared to its European counterparts. Extreme porn (anything depicting rape, beastiality, torture etc) is illegal in The United Kingdom whereas many other EU countries have no such restrcitions. As for the teens and twinks niche, as long as the models are at least 18 years of age or older at the time of production, you will generally be OK to view or download such content (in most western nations).

In conclusion - The above points are meant to help our surfers understand how to avoid the many pitfalls of searching for and buying gay porn on the internet. There is no "100% SAFE" - but if you keep the above points in mind you should have an enjoyable and relatively safe surfing experience. The only way to stay absolutely 100% safe is to disconnect your computer and throw it in the river. There is always going to be some element of risk when joining a site, whether its intentional disception on part of the webmaster or on part of an underage model who fakes their age or ID. Ultimately, its up to you to decide on your level of comfort and how much risk you are willing to accept when browsing or purchasing porn on the internet. The only one responsible for your actions is YOU - no one else!
